We Have A Voice Mission
We Have a Voice is a program of the National Empowerment Center whose purpose is to provide a safe place where people with mental health experiences can turn. A place where people’s voices are valued and lifted up. A place to find empowerment and understanding, and support in navigating systems after surviving trauma. It is completely peer-run and works side by side with the people we support through empowerment, voice, and choice.
Examples of support offered:
- Support filling out complaints or appeals
- Support navigating confusing systems
- Support finding legal representation
- Support with self-advocacy
About Our Volunteer Director, Estelle Collins
As a person with lived experiences with mental illness, trauma, psychiatric hospitals and group homes, I have experienced abuse and discrimination of different types when I was in the mental health system. Now as a Certified Peer Specialist, I want to use my lived experiences to support others to find their voice and empowerment in whatever way that means to them. It has been my dream and my purpose to create this space for 25 years, since I was in a long-term psychiatric hospital myself. It has been a long journey to get here, and I am excited to begin this next chapter.
