One challenge of the mental health service system is to develop a driving philosophy that places the individual receiving services at the center of the system and specific programs that deliver on that philosophy. In Florida tremendous gains towards these goals have been achieved through the creation of the Florida Self-Directed Care (FloridaSDC) program. FloridaSDC provides an opportunity for individuals who have been diagnosed with a severe and persistent mental illness to assess their own needs, determine how and by whom those needs should be met, and manage the funds to purchase those services. In this way the individual assumes control of their own path to recovery. Click the below link for a report on this program.
